In this article I will share my view on the PowerBar PowerGel Hydro in Mojito flavor with 51 mg of caffeine added. This Powerbar energy gel of 67 ml per portion has a 2:1 Carb Mix formula. I will try to compare with energy gel products from other brands (despite I’m not using these a lot).

Key Features Powerbar Powergel Hydro
On the product page of the PowerBar PowerGel Hydro one can read the following description:
Did you give everything you had during the past hour and now you want a PowerGel® that doesn’t require any additional fluid to consume it? Then you should try the Powerbar PowerGel® Hydro. It provides you with high-quality carbohydrates in a carbohydrate ratio of 2:1 of glucose and fructose sources. The liquid consistency of the gel is easy to swallow and doesn’t require you to drink immediately afterwards as with other gels. Ideal for runners or athletes who prefer a more liquid gel.
- Carbohydrate ratio of 2:1 of glucose and fructose sources
- Carbohydrate solutions contribute to the improvement of physical performance during a high-intensity and long-lasting physical exercise in healthy trained adults
- With natural flavourings
- Vegan
- Innovative packaging: easy to open and prevents additional waste through “Trash Chain”
- Mojito and Cherry flavours: contain 51 mg of caffeine per pouch
For me the most important feature is the liquid consistency which is closer to water than to gel. This not only limits the need to drink water after, but from my point of view it is also easier on your stomach. Despite the fact that the Powergel Hydro consists of concentrated carbohydrates in 2:1 ratio, it doesn’t taste super sweet, and even a with a bit of salt in the flavor. This makes it suitable for me to also use in warm weather.
It might not be a key feature from a nutritional point of view, but the innovative packaging is something I would like to highlight. Normally you tear of the upper part of the package (with your teeth), so you can start to swallow the energy gel. Powerbar has redesigned this bij connecting a small stripe of packaging to the part where you open the energy gel. It will stay connected to the packaging, so the upper lid will not land on the street or in nature. I really like this sustainability approach from Powerbar !

Concluding thoughts and wrap-up
The price point of PowerBar PowerGel Hydro is around € 2,80 per pouch or € 60,00 for a display of 24 pouches.
From the top 3 types of gels that I’ve tested, the PowerBar PowerGel Hydro has the biggest portion of total energy per 100 ml. (slightly higher than the SiS Beta Fuel Dual Source Energy Gel or Born Sportscare Super Liquid Gel).
What is even more important for me is the digestibility, which for me is great. This is a personal and subjective thing, but the PowerBar PowerGel Hydro is easy on my stomach in both cold and warm weather.
PowerBar also provides me with some excellent Energy Bars: PowerBar Energize Original Energy Bar and the PowerBar Ride Energy Bar.
