Born Super Liquid Gel – Cherry with Caffeine

In this article I will test the Born Super Liquid Gel in Cherry Flavour that delivers 21 grams of carbo hydrates and almost 30 mg of caffeine. I’m a huge fan of the Powerbar Powergel Hydro and wanted to compare if the Born Super Liquid Gel is also easy on stomach and digestion.

Key features Born Sportscare Super Liquid Gel in Cherry

On the Born Super Liquid Gel in Cherry Flavour product page of the Born Sportscare website you can read the following description:

Liquid carbohydrate gel with +21 grams of carbohydrates and an unparalleled effect. A Super Liquid Gel ensures an optimal replenishment of singular and multiple carbohydrates. Perfect for use during training or races. These liquid gels also contain sodium and potassium to optimize hydration.

  • Easy to drink, without water
  • Easy on the stomach
  • Can help to prevent hunger knock
  • 2:1 glucose/fructose ratio for increased carb uptake
  • Lactose- and glutenfree
  • Contains 29,7 mg caffeine as an extra feature

Probably the most important aspect of an energy gel is that it is easy for stomach and therefore digesting faster. Remark that brands like NatuSport have this easy absorption as a design philosophy behind their products (read: NatuSport Isotonic Sports drink Red Fruit).

Also super liquid portion of the product is important, it is very easy to drink almost like water and not like the thicker good old energy gels that would always require sipping your water bottle to get it in a digesteable state. This has also been one of my main drivers to stick to the PowerBar PowerGel Hydro with caffeine and Born Sportscare delivers the same easy to drink energy gel. There is even a Born Ultra Liquid Gel available, that I might test later.

If you look closely to the product design of the sachet, it looks very similar to the PowerBar PowerGel Hydro: A small stripe of packaging is connected to the part where you open the energy gel. So the piece that you will tear of stays connected to the packaging, so that this upper lid will not land on the street or in nature. Both PowerBar and Born Sportscare are leading in that area.

Nutritional values Born Sportscare Super Liquid Gel in Cherry

Before we go into the specific break down in nutritional values of the Born Super Liquid Gel in Cherry flavor with caffeine, let’s have a look at the total amount of energy per 100 ml and compare against the other energy gels that I’ve reviewed so far:

  1. PowerBar PowerGel Hydro in Mojito flavor with caffeine has a total energy of 684 kJ of energy per 100 ml
  2. SiS Beta Fuel Dual Source Energy Gel has a total energy of 673 kJ of energy per 100 ml
  3. Born Sportscare Super Liquid Gel consists of 654 kJ of energy per 100 ml.
NUTRITION INFORMATIONPER 100 MLPER POUCH = 55 ML.

of which sugars20 g11 g
Protein0,0 g0,0 g
Fibres0,0 g0,0 g
Salt0,12 g0,07 g
Caffeine54 mg29,7 mg

While the total energy doesn’t differ that significantly between the Born Sportscare Super Liquid Gel and the PowerBar PowerGel Hydro, the amounts of caffeine differ. Per 100 ml the Born Sportscare Super Liquid Gel has roughly 1/3 less of caffeine. Will the average cyclist experience the difference in practice, most likely not.

Concluding thoughts and wrap-up

The price point of 55 ml of Born Super Liquid Gel in Cherry Flavour that delivers 21 grams of carbo hydrates and 30 mg of caffeine is around € 1,99 per sachet. The price point of a sachet of PowerBar PowerGel Hydro is € 2,80 so the Born Super Liquid Gel is 1/3 cheaper, but with the well known quality and trackrecord of Born Sportscare.

The Born Super Liquid Gel in Cherry Flavour is a solid alternative for the PowerBar PowerGel Hydro energy gel which is more expensive, but with the same thickness, easy to drink, easy to digest and with caffeine included.

  • What energy gel are you using ? Do you prefer a Super Liquid or Hydro variant?
  • Are you using other Born Sportscare products?

Please let me know in the comment section. Another Born product I use on the bike mix and match different energy sources are their well known: Born Block with Magnesium and Caffeine. Born Sportscare also has a complete Bodycare line with for example Born Relax Cream review – recover and relax.
