Wolf Tooth Pack Pliers review

In this article I will share my thoughts about the Wolf Tooth Pack Pliers or in other words Master Link Combo Pliers. For me it is a compact version of the BBB LinkFix BTL-77 pliers that will let you open or lock a Missing Link (KMC), Quick Link (Shimano) or Powerlock (SRAM). Wolf Tooth wouldn’t be Wolf Tooth if they didn’t put some additional innovation into the product.

Key features and design Wolf Tooth Pack Pliers

On the product page of the Wolf Tooth Pack Pliers you can read the following description:

The patented Pack Pliers is a multi-tool developed to provide functions that are not found on a typical multi-tool and it is light and compact so you can carry it with you. This tool serves as a tire lever, Presta valve core remover, valve stem lock nut wrench and master link pliers. It also provides storage for two master links so you will always be prepared on the trail. Magnets hold the master links securely in place and self closes the tool.

The first and foremost important feature is the master link pliers function, or the ability to open and lock a Shimano Quick Link (I’m just riding Shimano drive trains). This is a compact and lightweight version of the BBB LinkFix BTL-77 pliers that I can put in the Craft Cadence Essentials Case. But I also store the Quick Links into the Wolf Tooth Pack Pliers (that are kept in place with integrated magnets).

The Wolf Tooth Pack Pliers are fully build from aluminum (black) with an anodized colored pivot. So you can choose a color you like the most. By the use of 7075-T6 aluminum there is a balance between strength and weight. In combination with a compact size (measuring 116 mm x 20 mm x 9 mm) the Pack Pliers are a great addition when you are out there on trails, singletracks or even the road. On my kitchen scales the weight tips 38,5 grams (excluding two Shimano Quick Links).

The other features are nice to have, just in case of an extreme emergency. Schwalbe Tire Levers with rim clip are my default tire levers, while I also have a separate Stan’s valve core remover in the Craft Cadence Essentials Case. All nice-to-have’s but probably some specialized tools can do the job slightly better.

Despite the US Patent D886564 there are copy cats out there. As a mechanical engineer by profession I therefore support the original design from Wolf Tooth, despite the fact that the retail price might be higher.

Concluding thoughts and wrap-up

The price point of the Wolf Tooth Pack Pliers is around € 35,00 which is not cheap (versus the Chinese copy cats out there). But the Wolf Tooth product quality and design is something I highly appreciated and thus support. It is a compact tool that I always take with me on a ride.

  • Do you also have a pair of Wolf Tooth Pack Pliers ? If so what are your experiences?
  • What other solution do you use when you are on the road or single track, when you need to open the Shimano Quick Link ?
  • Do you use any other products from Wolft Tooth Components ? Please let me know in the comment section.
