In this article I will share my experience with RISK Button Washer for Shimano Ultegra R8170 and Dura Ace R9270 Di2 Shift Levers that I use on my Canyon Ultimate CF SLX 8.0 Di2. It is an enhancement for the shifters so it gives you better and easier control of the buttons under the hood of your levers (that you can use to switch screens on your Garmin Edge 840).

The Shimano Ultegra R8100 Di2 groupset on my Canyon Ultimate CF SLX 8.0 Di2 is connected to a Garmin Edge 840 cycling computer. The Shimano Ultegra R8170 and Dura Ace R9270 Di2 Shift Levers have small buttons hidden under the top of the hoods, that can be programmed to switch pages on your Wahoo Fitness Elemnt or Garmin Edge cycling computer. For this programming you can use the Shimano E-Tube App to program. On BetterShifting you can see an extensive article and video on how to “change the button setup – enable buttons on Di2 shifter hoods“
I’ve first seen these RISK Button Washer for Shimano Ultegra R8170 Di2 Shift Levers in a YouTube video of Shane Miller (GP Lama), and used the Canyon Ultimate CF SLX 8.0 Di2 for some time without any enhancements. But the difference with the RISK Button Washer is more than significant. It is a big enhancement for the shifters so it gives you better and easier control of the buttons under the hood of your levers. With the RISK Button Washers you can really feel the click, and it is more easy to press these “hidden” buttons.
I wouldn’t run a Shimano Ultegra R8170 Di2 shifter without a RISK Button Washer anymore. A tiny must have item with big impact on the road.
Installation RISK Button Washer for Shimano Ultegra R8170 Di2 Shift Levers
For installation there are no tools required and should be doable for everyone with a bit of patience. 🙂
- Pull back the rubber hood of the Shimano Ultegra R8170 Di2 Shift Lever, so that the button is exposed
- Install/put the RISK Button Washer onto the button and make sure the drop shape is pointing parallel to the stem
- Pull the rubber hood over the Shimano Ultegra R8170 Di2 Shift Lever and make sure the guiding ridges are entering into the shifter correctly. Check the proper fit again.

Enjoy the easier use of the hidden buttons under the Shimano Di2 shifter hoods !
Concluding thoughts and wrap-up
The price point of a bag with 4 RISK Button Washers for Shimano Ultegra R8170 Di2 Shift Levers is around € 3,50 – € 4,00 which a superb value. The feeling of clicking the Di2 buttons on the hood is so much better, that I wouldn’t even run a Shimano Ultegra R8170 Di2 shifter anymore without the RISK Button Washer.
