In this article I will have a look at the Park Tool SR-11 Chain Whip that I’m using for over at least 10+ years. It was one of the first home mechanic tools that I’ve purchased together with the Shimano TL-LR10 Cassette Removal tool. And after all these year the Park Tool SR-11 Chain Whip is still going strong, with very limited wear.
Key features Park Tool SR-11 Chain Whip
On the Park Tool SR-11 Chain Whip product page you can read, the description that it has more functions than just the chain whip. The hexagon shaped hole can also be used to operate the Shimano TL-LR10 Cassette Removal tool (for example for tightening).
This combination chain whip and freewheel / lockring remover wrench is heat treated to prevent bending and flexing, with a molded handle for comfort.
The SR-11 has been discontinued and replaced by the SR-12
In the product overview of the Chain Whip SR 12.2 you can see the latest version doesn’t differ that much from the SR-11 design. And to be fair most of the Chain Whips will share this exact design.
A professional shop might consider the Park Tool CP-1.2 Cassette Pliers (it might be faster to use, and could provide more grip). However in practice I’ve never had any problems with the Park Tool SR-11 Chain Whip in combination with cassette removal tools:
- Shimano TL-LR10 Cassette Removal tool
- IceToolz Cassette Lockring Tool with 12mm Guide Pin, #09C2
Both lockring tools are used in combination with the Wera Zyklop 8000 C for 1/2″ sockets or the Hazet 916SP Ratchet.
Concluding thoughts and wrap-up
The price point of the Park Tool SR-12.2 Chain Whip (and Sprocket Remover) is in the range of € 35,00 – € 45,00 which is not cheap. But if you look at the 30 years of usage of the Park Tool SR-11 and the very limited wear on this quality tool, than the investment is more than fair. The price point of the Park Tool CP-1.2 Cassette Pliers is € 55,00 or higher.
Park Tool is a well respected bike tools brand, providing good quality tools. So your money is well invested and you will not need any new chain whip or cassette pliers any time soon.
And in the worst case scenario that you would wreck the chain pieces, you could easily repair these parts in your garage. And literally these are the only parts that could break. So it is a one time investment ! The Park Tool SR-11 Chain Whip is over 10+ years old and does what it needs to do (Just like the PB Swiss Tools 212LH-10 RB long hex key set). From my point of view a toolbox essential !
- What chain whip and/or sprocket remover are you using ?
