Tacx Daiya O2 water bottle 550ml review

In this article I will share my thoughts about the Garmin Tacx Daiya O2 water bottle in an Amacx Sports Nutrition branded version. The Tacx Daiya O2 water bottle is also the go to water bottle from world tour team Visma Lease a Bike. I will try to compare with the Elite Fly and Elite Jet water bottles, that normally go onto my bikes.

Key features Garmin Tacx Daiya O2 water bottle

On the official Garmin Tacx website the Daiya water bottle cannot be found. But there is a lot of information online available, which can be summarized:

Tacx Daiya 550ml is the newest addition to the range of premium sport water bottles, and the model takes its name from the Japanese word for diamond. The diamond-shaped cap for extra grip is the most prominent feature of Daiya, but the leakproof one-twist cap and high flow soft pull spout are what make the bottle shine. Known for its legendary durability Daiya is made using the same easy to squeeze plastic as all our bottles, and the model is available in 11 bottle, three (3) cap, and 10 spout colors¹.

The Tacx Daiya 550ml O2 is our atmosphere-friendly water bottle that reduces greenhouse gas emissions. How’s that? During the growth process of sugarcane the crop takes harmful CO2 emissions out of the air. From the stalk we retrieve among other bi-products ethanol, a renewable raw material that is the basis for “green plastics”. Tacx Daiya is designed, made and printed in The Netherlands using 100% recyclable BPA/F/S and PET(E) Free polyethylene, and the bottle is available in a 550ml drink capacity.

The biggest difference compare to for example the Tacx Shiva water bottles is the high flow soft pull nozzle (or spout), that has some resemblance with the Elite Fly Team- or Elite Yet water bottles. The diamond-shaped cap not only looks cool, but it also improves grip when openen or closing the water bottle. And for me it is cool to learn that a Japanese word is being used to name this Garmin/Tacx water bottle.

The sustainable efforts of Tacx with the O2 version the Daiya Water Bottle, is something I support. On World Tour usage and consumer volumes this can really make a difference.

Comparison Tacx Daiya Water Bottle with Elite Jet, Elite Fly water bottles

The Elite Fly Team Water Bottle is for me the benchmark when it comes to water bottles, not just because of the overall weight and nozzle design, but also because they keep the sports drink inside and not leaking on the frame.

When you squeeze the Tacx Daiya water bottle it feels a bit more rigid than the Elite Fly Team water bottle (and more like the Elite Jet water bottle in terms of wall thickness and weight). This can be cause by either a larger wall-thickness or the use of a different type of plastic or both. What the table above show is that a Tacx Daiya water bottle is almost 27 grams heavier than the Elite Fly Team bottle and only a 5 grams difference with the Elite Jet water bottle.

However it is not something that is hindering me from using the water bottle, nor is it less practical in use. It is simply a good bottle that is being used by World Tour teams.

Concluding thoughts and wrap-up

The price point of a Tacx Daiya Water Bottle is around € 4,00 and available in black, blue or KNWU orange. It is a reasonable price point, compared to for example Specialized Purist Water Bottles or Camelbak Podium Water Bottles.

The Tacx Daiya water bottles are used by a significant number of World Tour teams like Visma Lease a Bike. I really like the sustainable efforts of Tacx with the O2 version the Daiya Water Bottle. On World Tour usage and consumer volumes this can really make a difference.

To me it feels like the Amacx branded Tacx Daiya Water Bottle is competing with the Elite Fly Team range of bottles (I didn’t feel that the Tacx Shiva was in that range, despite being widely used). Personally I’m using the Tacx Daiya for some time now, but with the same price range I would probably opt for an Elite Fly Team bottle. It is a good, robust and reliable water bottle, but nothing special or lightweight. And if you are a weightweenie, that you can shave of 60 grams of the overall system weight, but opting for lighter bottles.

Tacx has been acquired by Garmin a little while ago. It is funny that the indoor trainers have been re-branded, but that other accessories like the Tacx water bottles don’t have online presence with the Garmin website.
