In this article I will share the reasoning why I’ve purchased a bottle of Silca Synergetic Oil Based Lube. Despite the big trend in chain waxing, it is still useful to have some oil based lube in your box with maintenance tools, especially for wet and rainy conditions.

Key features Silca Synergetic Oil Based Lube
On the product page of the Silca Synergetic Oil Based Lube you can read the following description:
The fastest and possibly quietest oil-based chain lube available today. If you want a quiet and efficient ride without the detailed cleaning of wax, Synergetic is the perfect choice.Specifications
- 2oz bottle
- Up to 12,000mi from a bottle
- Ultra-high wearing
- Ultra-quiet
- All conditions chain lube
Synergetic is the go to choice for anybody not wanting to make the switch to a wax based lubricant. It is the fastest oil based option we have ever tested with an incredible 500+ mile single application longevity.
I recall an article or video of the GCN Tech Show team, in which they added a bit of Silca Synergetic Drip Lube into the stove with hot melt wax. This would change or combine the characteristics of both products in a good way. Josh Poertner the product expert from Silca re-emphasized this message in a video: “Chain Waxing HACK You NEED to Know for Rain & Snow Conditions!“
While I initially purchased a bottle of Silca Synergetic Oil Based Lube for the above use case (adding it to hot wax), I also used it for simply waxing the chain of my Scott Scale 925 mountain bike in the Dutch autumn and winter. I’ve used the Morgan Blue Extra Dry Lube for MTB, Gravel and Cyclocross for some time, simply because it is cheap. 🙂
Silca also provides a Synergetic needle tip applicator very similar to the Wolf Tooth WT-1 Chain Lube but at the price point of € 7,00. For me this is a key feature for accurate application of the Silca Synergetic Lube.
What does the Science & research say ?
Silca has created a dedicated page with reviews of road.cc, cyclingtips but also Zero Friction Facts lab-testing including a report with results.
The science behind Synergetic® improves bicycle performance will save you money, save the planet (reduce toxins), and increase the life span of your chain and drive train. Plus the reviews (both professional and user) are proof that science works.
Concluding thoughts and wrap-up
The price point of Silca Synergetic Oil Based Lube is around € 26,00 – € 29,00 which is expensive compared to the Morgan Blue Extra Dry Lube. However the Silca Synergetic Oil Based Lube can be added to hot wax, to let the wax stick to the chain better in cold and rainy conditions.
In the article “The World’s Best Oil Based Chain Lubricant” you can learn a lot about the characteristics and Zero Friction Facts lab-testing for Silca Synergetic Lube.

Please let me know in the comments. Another go-to product from Silca is the Silca Ultimate Tubeless Sealant and Replenisher which is a system to keep your tubeless tire setup rolling without a puncture.
