BSCTools Chain Breaker Tool review

In this article I will review the BSCTools Chain Breaker Tool, a high quality workshop-grade Chain Tool that is cleverly build with the BSCTools Screwdriver SDH-1 handle as the foundation. The BSCTools Chain Breaker Tool works with all Shimano, SRAM and Campagnolo chains (you can get an extra breaker pin for that).

Key design features BSCTools Chain Breaker Tool

On the product page for the BSCTools Chain Breaker Tool you can read the following description:

For all speeds of chain plus Campagnolo Peening.
Works with SRAM flat top chains – have the flat at the top.
Detachable handle is also a 1/4”screwdriver.
Now can be used as a pivot press with the included M8x1 stainless steel flange nut.

Steel body, stainless steel shaft, handles and screwdriver connector, aluminium handle. Hardened steel pin (spare pin included).

2mm allen key included for detaching the screwdriver handle, when not in use the allen key fits inside the handle.

Despite the Shimano Quick Link (or alternative from SRAM) and a the BBB LinkFix BTL-77 pliers you cannot be a home mechanic without a proper chain breaker in your toolbox. At minimum you need a chain tool to adjust a Shimano HG chain to the correct length for the chainring cassette combination of your choice.

Modular design with BSCTools Screwdriver SDH-1

The orange handle of the BSCTools Chain Breaker Tool is actually the BSCTools Screwdriver SDH-1. You can call it modular design or two-tools-in-one, but this clever design and one of the coolest things I have seen in any Chain Breaker Tool design.

The BSCTools Screwdriver SDH-1 is a proven robust and very versatile tool. With the 2 mm allen key bolt, there is a solid mechanism in place to lock the handle and chain tool.

Another advantage would be that you don’t need to take an extra screwdriver/bitholder with you on a short cycling holiday. So super clever design work from Dave.

Pivot Press – Hidden tool in the BSCtools Chain breaker

The first and foremost important option of this tool is being a chain breaker for SRAM, Shimano and Campagnolo chains.

Second tool option included is the BSCTools Screwdriver SDH-1, which is the handle of the Chain Tool allows you to work on your bike when you have a box with quality bits like the PB Swiss Tools box of precision bits.

A third and hidden tool option is a pivot press for rear suspension pivots (given the length of the threaded handle). So if you have a fully suspension cross country racing machine you are covered with this 3-in-1 Chain Tool from BSCTools. Simply remove the threaded handle, remove the pin, use some drifts with 8 mm holes in them and the flange nut.

This is by my knowledge the only chain tool that can be used as a press for rear suspension pivots. So a cool and unique feature from this BSCTools quality product.

Concluding thoughts and wrap-up

The price point of the BSCTools Chain Tool is £ 64,00 or € 72,82 (of which £ 16,66 is for the Screwdriver SDH-1 handle). It is not cheap, but compared to the Abbey Bike Tools Decade Tool for € 222,00 it is a bargain. 🙂

I’m amazed by the quality and well thought-out engineering of the BSCTools products that I’ve reviewed so far. It are workshop grade tools, sometimes with big improvements over respectable cycling tool brands. So if you are looking for a bomb-proof chain breaker tool, than you can’t go wrong with the BSCTools Chain Tool. Reviewed by Dave Rome and benchmarked against other brands. About BSCTools

BSCTools originally started the business servicing bikes and slowly made more of our own tools as the need arose for use in the workshop. We started selling these hand made tools on eBay and before long we struggled to keep up with demand, so we started to get the tools manufactured.

Gradually we sold more and more tools, expanded our range during lockdown and are now purely focused on producing quality bicycle tools. BSCTools likes to make high quality, precision tools that make the job of the mechanic that much easier – the right tool for the job!

BSCTools is always developing new tools – please get in touch if you have any tool ideas or suggested improvements to our current tools!

  1. I do not recommend BSC tools after having a poor experience with their after sales customer support. I spent over £350 with them on various tools, including their chain tool, which is the item that has failed. I bought the chain tool for around £75.00 at the end of August 2025 and at the start of December 2025 the spindle which turns inside the chain tool body jammed solid. I only had the chain tool for 3 months and it failed. There was no indication the tool was about to jam up, in fact I was only lining up the driving pin with the chain and turning the handle to get it to the point of lining up the driving pin and the pin on the chain when the tool jammed.
I had used the tool about 3-6 times a week on average in my bikestore, so not extreme amounts of use, and its only used by me as I’m the sole employee.
When I contacted BSC and sent the tool back to them they just blamed me straight away for breaking the tool, despite the fact that anyone could see that the pin on the tool was not bent, so no excessive force was used to try to drive out a pin from a chain off centre. The owner David Gunthrope wrote ‘Someone has not lined the chain up properly, used excessive force and damaged the tool’
Honestly this was a bit of a shock as it is obvious from a cursory visual look at the tool that the pin on it is not bent so no force was used.
I told David that I would like a repair, replacement or refund as that is what consumers are entitled too under the Consumers Rights Act 2015.
He told me that the chain tool ‘are of good quality and work as intended and are as described. The tool was not faulty. You broke it.’
So David Gunthrope blamed me without any explanation or evidence that I broke the tool.
I was then told that I would have to pay for the body and shaft of the tool to be replaced, at a discount of 40%, so I am expected to pay £31.55 for a tool I already paid £75.00 for that broke after 3 months use. This is really unacceptable, if something purchased breaks within such a short time period you expect good business to stand by their product and offer a free of charge repair or replacement. They don’t even seem to care about my repeat business or the fact that I will not recommend their products to anyone. Its a pity as they do produce some good tools that I use in my shop, but after their lack of support and lack of understanding what consumers are entitled to, I won’t be going to them again. I bought a replacement Park Tool CT15 and it works far far better than the BSC tool ever did.
I suspect that the tool had a fault in the machining on the shaft or body threads when I first received it as it was slightly stiffer to turn than the Park Tool equivalent, but it was in no way too stiff that I was suspicious that there was an issue from 1st use.
David Gunthorpe also blamed me for not sending it back straight out the box, even though I explained to him that it was impossible for me to know what sort of ‘feel’ the tool should have out of the box from new as I’d never used a BSC chain tool to compare it too. It worked well initially and turned perfectly fine, just felt a bit ‘stickier’ than a Park Tool equivalent..
David Gunthrope is extremely unprofessional when is comes to customer care, his forte might be making tools but it is not dealing with customers.
His final, but one, email to me ended ‘I won’t enter into any further discussion on the matter. Our warranty decision is final.’
Then he didn’t reply to 3 further email from me, despite still having my tool which I paid for, and no resolution.
He replied to my 4th email with this line ‘If you continue to email about the matter then this will be harassment, your email address will be blocked and you will be unable to purchase from the website’
So David Gunthope still has the tool I paid for (he want’s £4.20 to send it back to me) which is ridiculous.
    Honestly BSC tools are appalling.

    • Hi Tomas,

I’m sorry to hear you’ve had a not-so-good experience with BSCTools.
I can only share that my experience with both the tools and the company honestly has been good so far.

  2. Unfortunatelty Tomas is upset because he damaged the tool and claimed it to be a warranty issue which it was not.
He was offered a discount on the parts to repair it and free labour.

Tools are hand assembled and checked prior to despatch.

Our suppliers make high quality parts and we very rarely get any issues. Issues are 99.99% caught before despatch. We do honour warranty where it is valid like with our dummy shock where we redesigned a part which wasn’t strong enough and repaired two for the customer.

Customer changed his story after the warranty claim was denied to say that there was an issue when he first used it. However he’d been using it fine for 3 months.

Having emailed us 3 more times after receiving the warranty outcome this was becoming harassment which is unacceptable

Note that warranty decisions are ours to make and warranty does not include postage costs

You can’t please everyone but we generally have very good customers who appreciate the quality of our tools
