BSCTools Shimano Preload Tool Bit for Hollowtech II Cranks

In this article I will review the BSCTools Shimano Preload Tool Bit for Shimano Hollowtech II cranks. It is basically a 1/4″ bit with pre-loadcap-shape that can be used with the BSCTools SDH-1 screwdriver, or with the Hazet 2262 screwdriver with 1/4″ bitholder or the PB Swiss Tools PB 186.6-100M bitholder screwdriver.

Key features BSCTools Shimano Preload Tool Bit for Hollowtech II Cranks

On the webshop page of the BSCTools Shimano Preload Tool Bit for Hollowtech II Cranks you can read the following description:

1/4inch Screwdriver bit to adjust Shimano Hollowtech || crank preload.

Available in standard or magnetic (small strong rare earth magnet attached).

Standard designed for use in our 3-Way Donut Screwdriver or Standard SDH-1 Screwdriver handle.

Yes … you read it correctly … it is a 1/4″ bit to be used with your preferred screwdriver with bitholder.

Back in the days I’ve invested in a box of precision bits from PB Swiss Tools that I use in combination with the Hazet 2262 Screwdriver or the PB Swiss Tools PB 186.6-100M Bitholder Screwdriver. I’ve played with the thought to purchased a Shimano Hollowtech II Crank Arm Tool TL-FC18 and cut off the handle, but I wasn’t sure that remaining hex-shaped tool end would be compatible with a 1/4″ bitholder.

BSCTools is providing exactly this solution I was thinking about (but never dared to wreck a € 35,00 tool, by cutting of the grip). BSCTools provides high quality tools, that can easily compete with Park Tool, Abbey Bike Tools or the German engineering brands reviewed here on the website (Hazet, Stahlwille, Gedore, Wera Tools).

When you look at the BSCTools Shimano Preload Tool Bit for Shimano Hollowtech II cranks you see that how it is machined, and you see that the product name is laser-etched onto the surface. Also the fit in both the 1/4″ bitholder and the Kogel Bearings Shimano Crank Arm Fixing Bolt / Wheelsmfg FIX-BOLT-1 for Shimano Dura Ace 9000 is perfect. It works will with my favorite bitholder screwdrivers, but also the BSCTools Screwdriver SDH-1 is an amazing combination with the BSCTools Preload Tool Bit. But also the Wera Zyklop 8000 Speed Ratchet with a 1/4″ bitholder would be a perfect companion. This is where you really see the DNA of high quality tool builder like Dave.

So with the BSCTools Shimano Preload Tool Bit I will retire the RISK cap removal tool for Shimano Hollowtech II. It is cheap and of significant less quality and fit than the others. I’ve put the Park Tool BBT-10 Preload cap tool Shimano Hollowtech II cranks on the workbench in my girlfriends garage. I’ve mentioned that with the Shimano Deore XT M8100 cranks the angle from the wingnut design will not be sufficient, because the pre load cap is going pretty deep into the threads.

That means that BSCTools Shimano Hollowtech II Screwdriver Bit and the Enduro Bearings BBT-001/B Preload Adjuster Tool are my preferred tools to work on Hollwtech II cranks and install a preload cap with excellence.

Concluding thoughts and wrap-up

The price point of the BSCTools Shimano Hollowtech II Screwdriver Bit in £ 10,83 or € 12,67 which is not cheap for a bit, but fair for a compact solution with workshop grade quality. A custom 1/4″ bit can make someone really happy. 🙂

BSCTools Shimano Hollowtech II Screwdriver Bit (in combination with the BSCTools Screwdriver SDH-1) and the Enduro Bearings BBT-001/B Preload Adjuster Tool are my preferred tools to work on Hollowtech II cranks and install a preload cap with excellent precision. The Park Tool BBT-10 is the preferred tool on the workbench of my girlfriend.

About BSCTools

BSCTools originally started the business servicing bikes and slowly made more of our own tools as the need arose for use in the workshop. We started selling these hand made tools on eBay and before long we struggled to keep up with demand, so we started to get the tools manufactured.

Gradually we sold more and more tools, expanded our range during lockdown and are now purely focused on producing quality bicycle tools. BSCTools likes to make high quality, precision tools that make the job of the mechanic that much easier – the right tool for the job!

BSCTools is always developing new tools – please get in touch if you have any tool ideas or suggested improvements to our current tools!
