In this article I will share my thoughts on the ACRZ Hydraulic Brake Piston Press Tool which is a quality aluminum piston press tool for disc brakes, that is also available in other branded versions, for example Sumart UBB 20 Piston Press for Disc Brakes (available from superior parts) or absoluteBLACK piston press.
Key features ACRZ Hydraulic Brake Piston Press Tool
Since the ACRZ Hydraulic Brake Piston Press Tool and the Sumart UBB 20 Piston Press for Disc Brakes are basically the same tool I will use the Sumart UBB 20 product description (while the ACRZ version has no description on Aliexpress).
The Sumart UBB 20 Piston Press for Disc Brakes protects your pistons from damage, and is an absolute game changer when working on the brake caliper. Easy to use and a super practical tool for any ambitious mechanic or professional workshop.
Features
- Prevents damage to ceramic pistons
- Specially designed for 2 piston calipers
- Can be easily put on or loosened by hand
The advantage of the ACRZ Hydraulic Brake Piston Press Tool or Sumart UBB 20 Piston Press is that the tool is crafted from aluminum, making at a robust and long lasting choice.
I’ve also purchased a plastic version (which retails for less than € 4,00) with a similar design but you feel the difference in quality (and play). As long as there is pressure on the parts that spread it will work. The aluminum ACRZ Piston Press is more accurate and robust, simply because of the material tolerances. Also you really see a difference in the magnets used (the ACRZ version has much stronger magnets and a much more controlled way of pressing out/in the disc brake pistons).
The design is simple and monkey proof. It is a bolt-nut design, where the nut has a special shape with an angle, as you can see in the side view of the ACRZ Hydraulic Brake Piston Press Tool. The design allows you open and close the piston press in a very controlled way. So there is no peak-force on the piston. The maximum width to open is roughly 14 mm. It is a highly compact tool, that should be part of your home mechanic tool box.
Concluding thoughts and wrap-up
The price point of the ACRZ Hydraulic Brake Piston Press Tool is around € 25,00 – € 30,00 (but I’ve even seen it for € 18,00). What I like is the solid metal construction, which make it an accurate and durable tool. Just like the CEMA Bearing Bottom Bracket Replacement Tool when you can use thread to spread discbrake pistons, that is always more accurate than a point load of a tire lever (or even the Jagwire Disc Brake Multi Tool with a long and flat surface)
The ACRZ branded version is also available as a SUMART UBB 20 version, that is exactly the same and aimed at 2-piston brake calipers. For a 4-piston brake caliper you would need the SUMART UBB 40 or 60. I though I could combine the cheaper plastic blue piston press with a wider head, but that is from my point of view not stable and accurate enough. So check out the supersonic parts website for the SUMART versions (and also check out the Workshop Grease Syringe from Supersonic Parts)
AbsoluteBLACK known from the OVAL chainrings also offers a Hydraulic Brake Piston Press Tool which is around € 36,00 and doesn’t seem to have an aluminum construction.
- Would you invest in a decent Hydraulic Brake Piston Press Tool ?
- Would you rather have a Jagwire Disc Brake Multi Tool variant and why do you prefer that over the reviewed option?
