SIS Turbo+ Indoor Training Sports Drink in Blueberry Freeze + Menthol

In this article I will share my experience with SIS Turbo+ Indoor Training Sports Drink in flavor Blueberry Freeze with added menthol for cooling sensations. Science in Sports or SiS is widely known for their Beta Fuel range of products that were used when Chris Froom blew up the Giro d’Italia on Col de Finestre back in 2018.

Key features SIS Turbo+ Indoor Training Sports Drink

While the official Science in Sports product page is not available anymore, the following description is used by an online retailer, that perfectly describes the benefits of Turbo+ Indoor Training Sports Drink:

SIS Turbo+ Powder is an isotonic carbohydrate energy drink with 62 g of carbohydrates in combination with menthol extract. This unique blend of carbohydrates and menthol is designed to meet fuel requirements during the session while helping to reduce the increased thermal stress that occurs with indoor turbo training sessions. Turbo+ Powder is designed to be used as a mouthwash and drinking strategy at regular intervals during exercise to get the maximum benefit.

Features and benefits
  • Improvement in heat performance up to 5%
  • 248 calories per serving
  • 62 g carbohydrates / 0.01% active menthol / neutral pH / 228 mg sodium28

SIS Turbo+ Indoor Training Sports Drink is available in two flavors: Blueberry Freeze and Cool Citrus. Turbo+ Gels were also part of the Turbo+ collection in addition to the Turbo+ powder. I personally really like the blueberry flavor in combination with some menthol additions. Just like a chewing gum with menthol it gives you a fresh feeling, during exercise.

What really persuaded me to buy a container with powder was the articleThe Science Behind The Turbo+ Range” by professor James Morton. Especially the “What does the research say ?” section:

Exercise in the heat also increases the reliance on carbohydrate as a fuel(11) and, as such, the combination of menthol and carbohydrate within Turbo+ Powder provide both a cooling and energy benefit. Turbo+ Powder is also designed to be used as a mouth rinse and drink strategy as carbohydrate has the ability to stimulate receptors within the mouth(12) which have a stimulatory effect on the central nervous system (CNS) and ultimately enhance exercise performance(12-14).

In the articleTurbo+ — Fuelling Indoors to Make You Stronger Outdoors” you can read the claim that performance can be increased by up to 5%. An interesting number to investigate (beyond the marketing aspects).

Fuelling these indoor sessions with menthol in Turbo+ can increase your performance by up to 5%. Becoming stronger indoors will take your athleticism to the next level outside on the road.

Concluding thoughts and wrap-up

The price point of SIS Turbo+ Indoor Training Sports Drink in flavor Blueberry Freeze with added menthol for cooling sensations is around € 28,00 for 455 grams of energy powder.

From my point of view this is on the high price-point side, simply because 850 grams of Amacx Turbo Drink Watermelon is available for € 27,00 or the Amacx Isotonic Sports Drink € 31,50 for 2.0 kg of powder. NatuSport Isotonic Sports drink Red Fruit will cost € 11,00 for 450 grams of powder. In other words there are better value for money options available.

However I like the approach of a more customized fueling approach for indoor training. Personally I would also appreciate the menthol additives in a hot weather scenario during summer times. Science in Sport (or SiS) is the perfect company to pioneer concepts like this.
