In this article I will share my thoughts about why purchasing and installing a set of Pro Bikegear Crank Protectors on your mountain bike and gravel bike makes sense. I have tested the Pro Crank Protector side by side with the All Mountain Style Crank Protectors on Shimano Deore XT M8100 and Shimano GRX 820 cranks.
Key features Pro Bikegear Crank Protectors
On the product page os the Pro Bikegear Crank Protectors you can read the following description of a no-brainer product:
The PRO Crank Protector is rubberised boot designed to protect crank arms.
Highlights
- Designed to protect crank arms from scratches and knocks
- Optimised for SHIMANO cranks
- Compatible with SHIMANO E8050, M8050 and M8000 eBike cranks
A little while ago I’ve purchased a 4iiii Precision 3 Power meter Deore XT M8100 for the Scott Scale 925 mountain bike for around 350-375. To keep this 4iiii Power Meter build on a Shimano Deore XT M8100 crankset safe I’ve installed both the all mountain style crank protector in the middle, and the Pro Bikegear Crank Protectors at the end of the cranks, where the Shimano XTR M9100 SPD pedals are threaded into the crank.
From my point of view this avoids scratches or potential damage, when you miss the clipping in accuracy. In addition I use Sidi Studs with the Sidi Drako 2 SRS Carbon Matt Mountain Bike Shoes in the muddy autumn and winter season. So this can potentially bring an additional risk.
The Thermoplastic Rubber Pro Crank Protector with product number PRAC0144 is an excellent, cheap and relative lightweight solution to protect power meter and cranks. I have installed these as well on the Shimano GRX 820 cranks of the Canyon Grizl CF SL 8 gravel bike.
Concluding thoughts and wrap-up
The price point of a set with Pro Bikegear Crank Protectors is between € 9,00 and € 12,00 which is cheap compared to buying a new crankset with power meter. Furthermore the Pro Crank Protectors fit, while the All Mountain Style crank-end protectors had different tolerances and didn’t stay in place.
- Are you using crank protectors on your mountain bike and gravel bike? Which ones?
