Alpitude Cornetto carbon chain catcher

In this article I will review the Alpitude Cornetto Carbon Chain Catcher, with a total weight of 5 grams. The Cornetto Carbon Chain Catcher is an alternative for the Carbonic Stummer Eugen, which is not available anymore. So let me try to compare.

Design Cornetto Carbon Chain Catchter from Alpitude Bike Components

On the product page of the Alpitude Cornetto Carbon Chain Catcher you can read this description:

Strong and reliable for a total weight of 5 grams, this is Cornetto. Protect your frame with this tiny but great product. How many times in professional races we can see many riders stopped by drop chain. Cornetto Chain catcher stops the dropping chain, so your frame is protect.

Tech Specifications
  • Material: carbon fiber Toray T700
  • Weight: 5 grams (ex. screw)
  • Screw: Ti Gr. 5 M5 25 mm

The mechanical engineer in me simply has a weakness for cool design. If you look at the curve and the variation in thickness, you will see the dedication and focus on details of Alpitude Bike Components. In some way it makes the Carbonice Stummer Eugen chain catcher look a bit straightforward.

Save your race! Cornetto is made from a solid piece of T700 Toray prepreg carbon fibre cured in high pressure processing.

The kitchen scales show a weight of XX grams for the Alpitude Cornetto Carbon Chain Catcher and XX grams for the titanium bolt that is included. Back in the days when I purchased the Carbonice Stummer Eugen I changed the black aluminum bolt with a titanium version, to feel more safe when putting the bolt on the required 5 – 7 Nm. Here it is included … so more value in a single package.

Just to clarify. The Alpitude Cornetto Carbon Chain Catcher works well in combination with the Shimano Ultegra R8150 Di2 12-speed front derailleur.

Concluding thoughts and wrap-up

The price point of the Cornetto Carbon Chain Catcher is € 30,00 which is more on the expensive end, but it is also an amazingly well designed and super lightweight product for weightweenies. Please note that also a titanium bolt is included that shaves of a couple of grams.

In addition I use chain catchers on all my bikes, a scratch on a carbon frame is way more expensive.

I really like all the little design details that Alpitude Bike Components has put into a relative simple product like a chain catcher. It looks amazing and is highly functional. Cornetto is also a classic icecream in the Netherlands, so I would even buy it even for that. 🙂
