Pedros Chain Checker Plus II

In this article I will show the design and capabilities of the Pedros Chain Checker Plus II which can do more than simply checking the wear of your chain. I will try to compare with the Park Tool CC-4 Chain Checker that lacks these additional capabilities.

Key features Pedros Chain Checker Plus II

On the Pedros Europe product page of the Pedros Chain Checker Plus II you can read the following product description:

Checking your chain for wear is one of the simplest things any cyclist can do to maintain drivetrain performance and minimize maintenance costs.

The Pedro’s Chain Checker Plus II makes this task quick and easy offering a simple check of 0.5% and 0.75% chain wear. To ensure the maximum life from your chain and accuracy of measurement, the tool employs a three-point design which properly isolates pin wear from roller wear. Other two-point designs do not and can incorrectly indicate a worn chain, robbing the user of additional miles and money.

The Chain Checker Plus II also includes a chain hook tool, perfect for simplifying chain removal and installation, and a chainring nut wrench, essential for removal and installation of chainrings.

Works on 1-13 speed chains. Chain wear tool approved by SRAM® for use on EAGLE® 12-speed and Flattop chains.

  • Precision laser cut design accurately measures 0.5% and 0.75% chain wear
  • Three point chain wear tool design properly isolates pin wear from roller wear
  • Chain hook tool and chainring nut wrench add functional versatility and value
  • Chain wear tool approved by SRAM® for use on EAGLE® 12-speed and Flattop chains

The most important feature is checking the chain wear in a very simple manner. The three point design combined with the respectable brands of both Pedros and Park Tool give me the confidence that these tools will accurately check the chain wear. In the past I’ve made the mistake to ride too long with the chain, and thus decreasing the overall wear of you drive train. The chain is the cheapest component, and that is why for example I use two chains per bike to hot wax (which gives you more kilometers per wear of the cassette and chainrings).

I normally use a bended spoke as a chain hook tool, but I can imagine that for a short cycling trip the Pedros Chain Checker Plus II can make sure this can cover multiple functions like chain hook and chainring nut wrench. The chain ring nut wrench is located at the bended end of the Pedros Chain Checker Plus II.

I run mainly 12 speed Shimano chains: Ultegra R8100, Deore XT M8100, GRX 820) but also Dura Ace 9000 11 speed. I’m using the Pedros Chain Checker Plus across these multiple bikes and group sets.

Concluding thoughts and wrap-up

The price-point of the Pedros Chain Checker Plus II is € 18,00 – € 20,00 which is fair from my point of view. If you would need to change a cassette or chainring-set due to worn-out chains it is way more expensive.

It is funny that Pedros Engineers have added some additional functions to the Pedros Chain Checker Plus. The Park Tool CC-4 Chain Checker that lacks these additional capabilities, but is as good as checking the chain wear.

  • Are you using any other Pedros Tools? If so which ones?
  • Are you using a chain wear checker? If so which brand and model.
