SlopeRoad Gear Groove Computer Mount for Garmin & Wahoo

In this article I will share my experience and thoughts about the SlopeRoad Gear Groove Computer Mount for Garmin and Wahoo Cycling Computers. I will also give some background information about SlopeRoad and their production of the computer mount as well as the installation process on my Canyon Ultimate CF SLX 8 Di2.

Key features SlopeRoad Gear Groove Computer Mount for Garmin and Wahoo

On the product page of the SlopeRoad Gear Groove Computer Mount the following description can be read:

The Canyon Gear Groove Computer Mount does not come with an integrated attachment option for a light or a GoPro. Additionally, the Garmin Edge 1050 and Wahoo Ace do not mount securely. We weren’t satisfied with that, so we developed a completely new holder for you.

Our mount stands out not only for its precision and aerodynamics but also as a true lightweight, weighing only 23 grams.

While other products, often made using PLA printing methods, lack durability and UV stability, we guarantee the highest quality: Our mounts are manufactured using the highly precise SLS (Selective Laser Sintering) process, machined with an accuracy of 0.3 mm, bead-blasted, and then painted black.

Installation is a breeze: Your new computer mount arrives pre-assembled and installs just like the original. Compatible with CP0039, CP0047 & CP0048.

The SlopeRoad Computer Mount comes in a simple box with 2 plastic zipper bags in it. The first bag consists of the SlopeRoad Computer Mount with the typical Canyon Gear Groove shape. The second bag consists of a Torx T25 bolt (stainless steal) for the bottom mounting option, a computer mount for the Wahoo interface and an elastic security strap. So a very complete package, where you would only need the installation bolt from the stock Canyon Gear Groove Cover Plate.

You directly notice the clear lines in the design when you look at the SlopeRoad Gear Groove Computer Mount for Garmin and Wahoo. I’m personally using the Garmin Edge 840 and Wahoo Elemnt Bolt v2 cycling computers (the latter with a Wahoo Garmin Quarter Turn Mount Adapter). This SlopeRoad Computer Mount has been redesigned for the Garmin Edge 1050 and the Wahoo Elemnt Ace, so you don’t need to worry about the strength of the mount in combination with these bigger cycling computers out there.

My kitchen scales show a weight of 39 grams for the SlopeRoad Gear Groove Computer Mount, that includes the bolt for the integrated GoPro mounting feature. Please not that the Canyon Gear Groove Computer Mount comes at 31 grams without the GoPro Mounting option (and I’m not sure if that holder is optimized for the Garmin Edge 1050 and Wahoo Elemnt Ace).

From a technology point of view the SLS process of production is a unique differentiator, which is vastly different from a “standard” 3D printing machine. This puts a smile on my face when I put my mechanical engineering hart on. I will discuss this in more detail in the about SlopeRoad section. 😉

Background SlopeRoad

SlopeRoad is based in Cologne, Germany which is within an hour drive from where I live. SlopeRoad is a young company, where most of the value chain work design, development, and production of the SlopeRoad mounts takes place entirely in Germany.

Many SlopeRoad competitors produce mounts and holders using relative inexpensive PLA printing. In this process, the material is applied layer by layer, similar to a hot glue gun. Prices for these PLA printers start at € 300 euros. A couple of tech-savy colleagues and friends own such a PLA 3D printer, with a price-point of around € 1000,–

SlopeRoad deliberately opted for the much more complex 3D laser printing process. In this process, a powder is fused by a laser. The advantage is that the components are much more precise and resilient. To me that is a good aspect that justifies a premium price. Especially the resiliency of computer mounts to which cycling computers of > € 400,– are attached.

The SlopeRoad (3D laser printing) Production process takes place in the following steps:

  1. Laser cutting
  2. Removal of excess powder
  3. Surface finishing by blasting with glass beads
  4. Black coloring

The SlopeRoad production facility costs over € 60.000,– The YouTube video above gives a good insight about the more complex SlopeRoad production process.

Concluding thoughts and wrap-up

The price-point of the SlopeRoad Gear Groove Computer Mount for Garmin and Wahoo is € 40,00 which is a bit more expensive than the Canyon Gear Groove Computer Mount that has no GoPro mounting option at all. But it is a more than fair price point for a high quality well produced computer mount !
